Thundersnow!

Sometimes when we get a fast-moving snowstorm, like we did today, we also get thunder and lightening along with it. A huge flash of light and then some incredible thunder! Can I just tell you how much Connor hates thunder? 02-06-10 010Today’s snow is very wet and heavy snow and when I was walking Connor earlier this evening, I could hear the thud of big wet clumps of snow falling from the trees. 02-02-10 003This is the kind of snow that takes the power lines down.  But not here… not yet!

PURPLE Friday

I am not a huge football fan, but I do support Baltimore’s sports teams, the Orioles and the Ravens. I live about a five minute walk from both of our sports stadiums (stadii?). On warm days, I can hear the cheering from the games, which is always lots of fun. There is a buzz to the neighbourhood before and after the games, with everyone arriving hours before the game to tail-gate, and hunt for parking spaces. Luckily, we have residential permit parking, so it’s not much of a problem.BaltimoreRavens

The Fridays before games are designated as Purple Friday, and as such, I am participating. Raven’s purple is a really difficult colour to match. Sometimes, it looks very dark blue like in the logo above, and other times it’s a deep purple like this hoodie.  thumb

It’s also a very hard colour to light, because purple is so close to the end of the spectrum. But in Baltimore, we try and light signature buildings with purple.

Here’s Baltimore’s City Hall

City Hall Johns Hopkins Hospital’s famous domeHopkins The Washington Monument in BaltimoreMonument I am so predictable… I wrote about the same topic almost exactly a year ago when I went out on a bitter cold night and took some pictures of the purple.  We lost that game, but hopefully, we will win this one! I’ll be wearing a pale purple black cashmere sweater and a deep purple pashmina tomorrow in solidarity.

WHAT TIME IS IT?

Save the Date: Groundhog Day Party 2011

You might remember last year, I posted photographs of the fabulous Groundhog Day Party I attended, then was requested by the Venue which hosted the party to remove them immediately. Which I did… sort of. GHD11_BACKxxThe Venue, which shall remain nameless, is once again hosting the Groundhog Day Party to benefit the Baltimore Architecture Foundation, on whose Board of Directors I serve. The date is Saturday, February 5th, from 7:30 to midnight. The party is lots of fun and it is a great opportunity to see the incredible interiors of a very private space. Maryland Club 028The band, The Swingin’ Swamis, is excellent. The Venue’s chef is renowned. The architecture is awesome and the auction items are brilliant. Amongst the items are a gift certificate to my favourite fabric house, DeBois Textiles; tickets to the National Aquarium at Baltimore and a personal tour for six with the curator of Evergreen House, James Archer Abbott.Evergreen 003However, best of all, one of the auction items is a private cocktail party for four in the summer gardens of consummate hosts Stiles Colwill hosts-with the MOSTand Jonathan Gargiulo, owners of Halcyon House Antiques. LOVE this man! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see an amazing estate and spend time with two incredible men. And I am not just saying this because they’re friends! Check out what Southern Accents had to say about Stiles and Jonathan’s entertaining style here and here. This could be YOU! For tickets, or to leave an absentee bid on any of the items, click here. It’s going to be a GREAT party!

I’ll Take This… Settee

I was driving by my favourite consignment shop the other afternoon and spotted this sweet little settee out front, either waiting to go in for sale, or on the sidewalk, waiting to be loaded into the truck for delivery. 1-4 065 What I especially love about this picture is how the shades of blue and green are all in the same range. The celadon green velvet on the little settee and then the olive green of the house directly behind it, and the blue of the house next door, all combine to make a fabulous palate of colour.
